When asked what is a “21st century classroom”? My immediate thought was a classroom filled with computers, ipads, and students using their cell phones. Time waits for no one. Why wait to make a change in a classroom? Technology is being used left and right, students in elementary school are being taught how to type, use Microsoft products, and how to find valid resources. If we can teach children how to use a computer to write research papers and find online resources then why can’t we use technology to teach students math, reading, writing, history, and science? That question has been answered in a few classrooms but not all. Technology can be used in numerous ways. It could be substituted such as having worksheets/textbooks online, it could be used to get outside opinions about an essay/topic through the use of blogging, twitter, or Facebook, and it could be used to communicate with students in the classroom through Google Documents on Google Drive. If unsure where you may lie in the use of technology the Webb’s DOK and the SAMR model was created to see if teachers are challenging their students as well as if technology being utilized to its full potential. With these models they indicate if you are teaching above or below the line. The Webb’s DOK specifically tests the teacher if there students work contains critical thinking about the work that has been taught through four different levels, one being recall the work that has been taught, level two being the skills and concepts learned, level three being strategic thinking and level four being extensive thinking. Not all lessons being taught will be at a level four but long term projects should contain some expectation of having a level four. The SAMR model is divided into two categories Enhancement which lies below the line and Transformation above the line. Enhancement is divided into substitution and augmentation of technology and Transformation divided into Modification and Redefinition. Getting above the line in the SAMR model at time gets difficult because at that level the teacher must find a way that his/her work can only been done using a computer and is shared with a professional outside the classroom depending on the topic of the assignment. Most teachers stay below the line because it is easier to substitute and modify a lesson then to create something new. I fear teachers are afraid to try different technology because of the little time teachers have with their students. I believe that the teacher should use what the students use daily which is twitter to get involve with educational chats to gain insights about a specific topic they are doing or a problem they are having in class by doing this the student is using critical thinking and modification with their work. Since technology is continuously advancing teachers should evolve with the advances of technology with their student and leave the 20th century’s methods of teaching in our past.
I joined a group called Culture of Learning Chat. The first time I tried joining the chat I was lost and confused because so many people were posting there opinions and reactions that I could not understand how to incorporate myself. The second time I understood that I had to load a program call “TweetChat” to follow the conversation which made it easier to follow. This chat begins every Monday from 9-10 so I was prepared the second time to begin the chat but this time to give feedback. At first I took time to read the questions and the responses that others made so I could see how others answered the questions. I began by introducing myself and what I studied, then I was off answering the first question, the second, and the third until the chat came to an conclusion. I found myself unaware of how quickly time had gone by because of how interested I was to hear what others felt. I used what we discussed in class about the use of twitter in classrooms as well as Google documents and had a few feed backs. Many thought it was a good idea to start off with Google docs and drive in classrooms as a way to have technology in the classroom without being overwhelming. I was excited when I received responses and when other members of the chat favored my post. The next time I join the chat I would like to as well give responses to others ideas either disagreeing or agreeing with them.
Ken Robinson talks about how schools kills creativity. He says that as children grow up they fear being wrong yet being wrong brings out the creativity in children, so if children fear doing wrong they fear to attempt and once they fear to attempt they would not try to expand themselves. Every education system has the same learning bases starting with math, language, and humanities, as those subject are mandatory yet at the bottom are art, dance and drama he says “yet we all have bodies”. Robinson stated “Public education only winner is to produce universal professors that only live in their heads but slightly to one side they look at their body as a way to transport their mind”. The educational system was not existent since the 19 century and many were force to look the other way on careers that involved art, dancing, singing. Those who are highly talented and creative were not looked at because they were denied their opportunity because they weren’t good enough at school or were not recognized. Robinson stated that intelligence is academic diversity, visual, abstract, dynamic creativity, distinct. He talks about a famous dancer where her teachers believed she had a learning disability because she could not stay still and they told her family member that she does not have a learning disability but she is a dancer while others would force pills to calm her down her parents took her to a dancing school where she found that she is not alone. At the end of the video Robinson said “its our job is help them make something of it”. I believe fully of what Robinson is stating about education and how control it is. How schools can easily take away art, cooking and music from high schools and middle schools. Yet during those times periods is where children try to find their interest in life, what they enjoy doing, and maybe one day being an expert at it and becoming famous. In school system they can easily remove those class as for them it may not be a priority in compared to having another history class or English class. Personally I did not know how talented in art I was until I took an art class in drawing and painting, shocked that I had an ability to blend colors and to see things that many do not. I would have not discover that if it was not provided and if I did not take the chance.
My first article titled ‘Is your school’s “digital citizenship” practice a pass or fail?’. This article is about the use of twitter by schools to communicate community events. The issue with this is the students who would follow the school, because twitter is publicly viewed students had inappropriate messages and photos that others could see such as parents, staff, and the school board which may give a negative view of the school. There motive to teach students that the things they post may affect them in time and may want to be aware of what they post. Unaware that things that are posted can go viral, losing the opportunity for a working position. I agree that students do need to be aware of what they post but it is not only teachers responsibility but as well as parents to teach and surveillance there children about the safety and harms of social sites. Personally I would think the same way, if I see too many negative comments I would ultimately think negatively about the school and what they are educating their students.

I agree that as a nation that is further developing in technology that we must take advantage of its uses. The only way we can take advantage of these technological advancements is through implementation. When implemented and either succeeded or failed to let others who are interested in using technology in classes informed of either options that could be done to improve or options to replicated in classes worldwide. By doing blogs and registering for a twitter is a way to communicate with other teachers expressing thoughts and opinions about what should be done within a classroom by using technology.
My next article titled “Why Measuring Student Growth Matters Now More than Ever” discusses that students between fourth grade and eighth grade have been below standard average in both reading and mathematics. Even with the division from poverty districts and English second language students. When students are below average budget cuts are made. To keep from budget cuts and improve students success the article expressed that teachers should have an insight of where each student is starting from before entering the class and at the end of class see if the student has improved instead of having a standard test. I agree that every student learns at a different pace and through the use of technology educator could form a practice aptitude test for students who need more practice then others. Allowing students to constantly work at their own pace
The last article I read was titled “4 Things To Consider as you Allow Phones in Class” describing that a phone can be a good resource to a dictionary and a way to do homework assignments. Having the students put there phone upside down in there desk allows them to be unable to use their phone during class time unless asked to . The teacher would follow this and have her phone on her desk as she would take pictures of the class to show the positives of having a phone as an education tool. I agree with what she is doing with her class because now cell phones are similar to a computer. I use my phone to find quick answers to questions that I may not understand fully.
In conclusion technology is an amazing way to find answers as well as finding possibilities to improve both in the classroom and in your own personal life. With this would help future generation be able to connect with technology in everyday life.
